hunting and gathering

Dan muscled this prized furniture possession all the way from the Melrose Trading Post to our apartment Sunday morning. I pathetically tried to help…for a second. We spotted it last Sunday, talked about it all week, and went back for the kill.  I’ll be sure to show it off with a few other coming-alongs in an apartment post this week!

downtown LA

Downtown LA is, like many cities, beautiful and sketchy all at once. Dan and I spent the evening there this past weekend (we BOTH had a Saturday off?? together?? YES!), and I agreed when he said that the night seems to mask the not-so-charming parts of DTLA, and highlight the goods: architecture, cool restaurants and bars, strings of lights, and perfect summer weather.

After a day full of errands, we treated ourselves to the Deluxe seafood tower at Water Grill. Designed for 3-4 people? PLEASE. We crushed that sucker and we’ll do it again. I loved the spaciousness and big leather booths lining the walls. We sat at the huge rectangular bar right in front of the raw bar, and watched two talented dudes shuck oysters and clams. We then had cocktails at our favorite bar in LA, where I sipped my new favorite drink, a mint daiquiri. Then we finished the night with a snack at Baco Mercat.

wedding

The last month has been very busy with amazing things, and thus the blog has been neglected. Among those things included performing in a play, taking Writing Lab at the Groundlings, and settling in to our new home. We’ve just returned from an awesome weekend in Chicago. My mom scored us a last minute reservation at Next (!), and we attended a gorgeous wedding at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and watched two very dear friends get married.

The blog will get a lot more attention this coming month, and my next projects will be apartment related. I’ve been pinning up a storm of inspiration, and I can’t wait to add a couple key furniture pieces to the place and some personal touches. Here are some photos from the wedding weekend!

new home

Dan and I signed the lease for an apartment in this cutie yesterday! I’ve always said when I moved into an apartment with a washer/dryer in unit I’d know I’d “made it”.

Dear World,

I’VE MADE IT!

Love,

the crazy lady who can’t wait to do laundry

We also have an adorable little patio and separate dining room to host dinner parties galore. I’m feeling very inspired by this new space, and have been madly pin-ing on Pinterest. I am dreading the actual packing and hauling, of course, but at least Dan is here to do it with me. Also, if anyone spots a chic fire place screen that isn’t boring or right out of your Grandma’s house, help a sista out and send it my way!

Fairfax

My home will be changing next month. Dan and I are moving into our own place, and Allison is moving in with our friend Miguel. Allison and I will have lived in this apartment for exactly two years. I loved this apartment, and even though I’m really excited to start this next little chapter with Dan and build our home, I’m going to miss so much about this place. Like, I don’t think it will be as funny to text Allison from my bed when she’s not one wall over! That being said, I know Allison will be over at the new place (hello, we have to watch The Bachelorette together), and I’m sure there will be lots of sleepovers. Most importantly, we’ll still be there for each other the way we are now, I just may have to get dressed to have a big cry instead of standing in a robe in our hallway. Dan and I are looking at apartments in our current Fairfax Village neighborhood, as well as further east. Keep your fingers crossed for us that we find a place we really love! Here are some photos that remind me of the neighborhood and my current LA home.

welcome home

Dan has officially lived in LA for just over two months. Now that he’s here, I can’t imagine how I went so long without him on a daily basis. It’s as if he’s always been here, and yet every morning when I wake up there’s something special that wasn’t there before. I made this little video using the 8mm iphone app the day Dan moved here. In a way, it’s the beginning. Hope you like it!

birthday

Miss Allison turned 25 on Sunday! We celebrated with a pizza party at Pitfire Pizza around the corner, and I made this ice cream pie to fit in the with the pizza + ice cream cake birthday feel. Allison’s best friends from college flew out from NYC for the celebration, and Dan whipped up some heavenly jalapeno margaritas to get the party started. It was such a fun day! We even challenged some kids to a foosball game on the hot pink, ALL GIRLS foosball table. It ruled. We love you, Allison!

Diane Keaton

I recently read Diane Keaton’s memoir, Then Again, and really enjoyed it. She writes about her career, iconic films she worked on, and actors she dated. But it’s more a story about her family, and her relationship with her mother. This one excerpt in particular touched me and I made sure to bookmark it to share here on the blog. The sentiment isn’t revelatory, but I’ve never heard it said quite this way before:

…pretty, with its promise of perfection, is not as appealing as it used to be. What is perfection anyway? It’s the death of creativity, that’s what I think, while change, on the other hand, is the cornerstone of new ideas. God knows, I want new ideas and new experiences.

I also loved this excerpt about Woody Allen:

Woody woke up the morning after and opened The New York Times. On the front page he read that Annie Hall won best picture and went back to work on his next script, Interiors, a drama. Woody stood by his principles. To him there was no “best” in an art form–that included no best director, no best picture, and definitely no best actress. Art was not a Knicks basketball game.

p.s. Even though it may not be her most well known or biggest role, I’ve always loved Diane Keaton as Nina Banks in Father of the Bride I & II–her chemistry with Steve Martin is perfection! First Wives Club is another favorite. What’s yours?
