the whaling club

This weekend, Dan and I hosted a cocktail event at our apartment that we named The Whaling Club. We had the best time! Thank you to all who came out for the first run. We hope it was the beginning of many social evenings, enjoying fine cocktails with old and new friends. How cool is that ice? Dan hand cut it all himself out of twenty-five pound blocks! He’s a dedicated gentleman, that’s for sure.

Perhaps you’ll join us for the next one? Leave a comment if you’d like to be added to our mailing list. Cheers!

*special thanks to our friends Sarah + Noah for helping us plan and fine tune everything.

the coupe

Dan and I have been prepping for an intimate cocktail event we’re hosting at our place this weekend, and it’s got me romanticizing about Speakeasys and classic cocktails. There really is something so special about sipping a well made drink, the weight or delicacy of the glass in your hand, while surrounded by friends, interesting strangers, or just that certain someone. My favorite end of summer drink was a shaken fresh mint daiquiri served in a coupe glass…and lots of champagne! (all photos found on Pinterest)

downtown LA

Downtown LA is, like many cities, beautiful and sketchy all at once. Dan and I spent the evening there this past weekend (we BOTH had a Saturday off?? together?? YES!), and I agreed when he said that the night seems to mask the not-so-charming parts of DTLA, and highlight the goods: architecture, cool restaurants and bars, strings of lights, and perfect summer weather.

After a day full of errands, we treated ourselves to the Deluxe seafood tower at Water Grill. Designed for 3-4 people? PLEASE. We crushed that sucker and we’ll do it again. I loved the spaciousness and big leather booths lining the walls. We sat at the huge rectangular bar right in front of the raw bar, and watched two talented dudes shuck oysters and clams. We then had cocktails at our favorite bar in LA, where I sipped my new favorite drink, a mint daiquiri. Then we finished the night with a snack at Baco Mercat.

wedding

The last month has been very busy with amazing things, and thus the blog has been neglected. Among those things included performing in a play, taking Writing Lab at the Groundlings, and settling in to our new home. We’ve just returned from an awesome weekend in Chicago. My mom scored us a last minute reservation at Next (!), and we attended a gorgeous wedding at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and watched two very dear friends get married.

The blog will get a lot more attention this coming month, and my next projects will be apartment related. I’ve been pinning up a storm of inspiration, and I can’t wait to add a couple key furniture pieces to the place and some personal touches. Here are some photos from the wedding weekend!

manhattan beach

Manhattan Beach feels like that classic summer vacation town; a corner ice cream parlor, lots of clothing boutiques, rows of houses and apartments–each one taller than the one before it in an attempt for more ocean view. And yet, it still feels more local than touristy. The people grabbing drinks with friends on a Friday afternoon or drinking coffee on the sidewalk seem to be enjoying their little downtown neighborhood. Dan and I had hoped for a beach day, but it was surprisingly cool and breezy. So instead we walked down the pier and checked out the small collection of ocean wildlife and brave surfers in the rough waves (brrr!). Then we wandered among the houses lining the beach, and picked out the ones we liked while making up stories about their tenants based solely on appearance and imagination (we’re really good at that game).

We finished with an early dinner at MB Post. Dan and I were obsessed with the romanesco tossed in lemon, capers, parmesan, and chili flakes. So obsessed that we tried to replicate it at home with cauliflower the next night playing off of this recipe.

Do any of you live by the ocean? I grew up near Lake Michigan, which as a kid felt like an ocean, but is very different. Even now, living in LA, going to the beach is still a bit of a destination event–reserved for full days off. I’m going to make it a priority to get myself to the beach quite often this summer. I’ll let ya know how it goes! Speaking of beaches, I’m currently headed to the Outerbanks for the week! Lucky me! More on that later. It officially feels like summer!

downtown

Dan and I found ourselves with a free Friday (surprise!) and decided to venture downtown to try a few food haunts we had heard a lot about. First stop was Umamicatessen. Here’s a little (non)secret: I live for Umami’s Hatch Burger. Like, I’m dating the Hatch Burger. And Dan…likes all of them. So I guess that means he has a lot of girlfriends. Umamicatessen is neat because it’s a big dining hall style with five different kitchens, inspired by (quick, guess) the American delicatessen. I’m dreaming over those mini knish’s and grain mustard below. Dreaming, I say!

We then jumped in the car and went to the Arts District for some ooey gooey goodness at The Pie Hole (best name ever/great website/watch the film). They write the menu daily on a big sheet of paper. My friend, Allison, always says she’ll serve pie instead of cake at her wedding because she loves it so much. I’ve always thought that was sweet! Would you serve something nontraditional at your wedding? Dan says he imagines tray passing awesome craft beer cans instead of champagne! I dig.

Guys, I try not to be the girl who takes pictures of food. I try. Or I take ’em real fast when Dan’s not looking. Don’t get mad. You love to hate it. So it’s a win-win!
