OBX part III

Great things about OBX in no particular order:

1. it feels über remote and special (the closest airport is 2 hours away in Norfolk, VA).

2. it’s a skinny strip of land off of North Carolina, in some parts you can see views of the bay and ocean on either side of you.

3. my family’s rental house in Pine Island: spacious, airy, tons of windows, huge bathroom, balconies, a hammock, ocean view…

4. eating grilled cheese after a morning on the beach. you’re a little crispy. it’s a little crispy.

5. seeing a dolphin!!!

6. letting that summer sun glow be the only make-up you need.

7. seafood! lotsa crab in my tum.

8. body boarding in the Atlantic. it’s a thrill!

9. that small town feel. especially in the historic district of Corolla where we get BBQ from a little shack (see below).

10. living in my bathing suit.

11. reading books (or kindles)! no computers at the beach!

12. the house is upside down. kitchen/family room at the top, bedrooms at the bottom.

13. cocktails! you best believe I hand squeezed that margarita lime juice for my fam! and dad stirred some classy boulevardiers.

14. mom and dad wake up way before me so the coffee has already been made!

15. my whole family (mom, dad, grandmom, willyman) loves it and is together, and that is the ultimate cozy boat my friends.

OBX part II

IMG_5021
My family has been going on summer vacations to the Outerbanks off and on since I was a kid. A little (largely) known fact about me: I love to lay out and get a tan. I know! It’s so bad! But it feels so good (and some say is the perfect summer accessory). I got a good amount of body boarding and wave splashing in the Atlantic in this trip as well. We had lay-out worthy weather pretty much the whole week. The OBX beaches are so remote and unpopulated. I love the feeling of walking barefoot from our rental house (aptly named Gem of the Ocean) along the wooden walkway that leads you over the dunes to the beach. I truly think there is something therapeutic about an ocean. And you know the best part about a vacation? Waking up and knowing that the day is yours to do nothing. I’m a seriously guilty person. I have no clue why, but unless I’ve dedicated or deemed a day a “vacation day”, I feel guilty doing anything that isn’t serving a greater purpose/goal. So this week I let the feeling of no obligations wash over me. And let me tell you…it felt really good. I love these pictures because they really capture the feeling of what it’s like there–which is sometimes hard to do in land and seascapes. I also played around a little bit with my Diana F+ film camera. Don’t really know what I’m doing there yet, but I’m interested in seeing the results and will post when I get them developed.

OBX part 1

I’m in the Outerbanks, NC this week with my family! Many more photos and stories to come, but for now here’s a little taste of my week via Instagram (you can follow me at MarieBuck5). We’ve only got one full day left before the travel day back to LA, and while I miss Dan terribly, I hate saying goodbye to my family, Gem of the Ocean (my bathroom/closet is huge! there’s a pool in the backyard!), and this week of beach bliss…

Herb Ritts

If you’re in LA or visiting LA any time between now and and August 26th, the Herb Ritts: L.A. Style exhibition at The Getty Museum is a must. And get the audio tour! It’s only $5 and totally worth it! I don’t know about you, but audio tours ususally help me engage. I love knowing details about a piece I wouldn’t normally have spotted or understood.

Herb Ritts emerged in the 1980s as one of the top fashion and celebrity photographers. Sometimes I forget that photography isn’t always about capturing a perfect image, it’s about capturing something interesting, something the photographer, subject, and environment create. You could tell Herb Ritts had an strong point of view; he was taking a picture with purpose and trying to achieve an idea he had imagined or conceptualized. His work is incredibly intimate, at times sensual, and ultimately stunning.

The audio tour was especially interesting because the narrators often spoke about what went in to the creation of that photo during the shoot. Cindy Crawford and Richard Geer both narrate about their relationship as muses and friends of Mr. Ritts. I was touched by their respect and admiration for him. Oh, I just love going to The Getty! I certainly don’t go often enough. And I was happy to have a friend in town and true excuse to go. The gardens and architecture are enough of a reason for a visit. What’s your favorite LA museum? LACMA is another favorite and just down the street from me!

ballet

Last week, we went out and saw First Position, a documentary that follows six young dancers as they prepare for a worldwide ballet competition that offers prestigious dance scholarships and company job offers. First let me say, that I love going to the movies–a love that has deepened since moving to LA. Going to the movies, even though everyone does it, feels special. It’s SO much better than watching movies at home! No distractions (iphone, laptop…). And I especially love last minute trips to the movies! When and where’s it playing? Can we make it? If we leave now? Let’s go! It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s just an extra treat on top of a treat! And I love treats.

Now, First Position was lovely. Watching these kids’ dedication to their skill is inspiring. While I was watching, I seriously thought about how I could work harder at things in my own life! One of the kids in the movie, Jules, absolutely stole my heart. He was a young boy who started dancing because his older sister did. It was pretty obvious he didn’t really like it. He was so cheeky and adorable–truly the comic relief among the other dancers! I also admired his disciplined sister, Miko. Have you seen it? Which dancer’s story did you find most enthralling?

manhattan beach

Manhattan Beach feels like that classic summer vacation town; a corner ice cream parlor, lots of clothing boutiques, rows of houses and apartments–each one taller than the one before it in an attempt for more ocean view. And yet, it still feels more local than touristy. The people grabbing drinks with friends on a Friday afternoon or drinking coffee on the sidewalk seem to be enjoying their little downtown neighborhood. Dan and I had hoped for a beach day, but it was surprisingly cool and breezy. So instead we walked down the pier and checked out the small collection of ocean wildlife and brave surfers in the rough waves (brrr!). Then we wandered among the houses lining the beach, and picked out the ones we liked while making up stories about their tenants based solely on appearance and imagination (we’re really good at that game).

We finished with an early dinner at MB Post. Dan and I were obsessed with the romanesco tossed in lemon, capers, parmesan, and chili flakes. So obsessed that we tried to replicate it at home with cauliflower the next night playing off of this recipe.

Do any of you live by the ocean? I grew up near Lake Michigan, which as a kid felt like an ocean, but is very different. Even now, living in LA, going to the beach is still a bit of a destination event–reserved for full days off. I’m going to make it a priority to get myself to the beach quite often this summer. I’ll let ya know how it goes! Speaking of beaches, I’m currently headed to the Outerbanks for the week! Lucky me! More on that later. It officially feels like summer!

downtown

Dan and I found ourselves with a free Friday (surprise!) and decided to venture downtown to try a few food haunts we had heard a lot about. First stop was Umamicatessen. Here’s a little (non)secret: I live for Umami’s Hatch Burger. Like, I’m dating the Hatch Burger. And Dan…likes all of them. So I guess that means he has a lot of girlfriends. Umamicatessen is neat because it’s a big dining hall style with five different kitchens, inspired by (quick, guess) the American delicatessen. I’m dreaming over those mini knish’s and grain mustard below. Dreaming, I say!

We then jumped in the car and went to the Arts District for some ooey gooey goodness at The Pie Hole (best name ever/great website/watch the film). They write the menu daily on a big sheet of paper. My friend, Allison, always says she’ll serve pie instead of cake at her wedding because she loves it so much. I’ve always thought that was sweet! Would you serve something nontraditional at your wedding? Dan says he imagines tray passing awesome craft beer cans instead of champagne! I dig.

Guys, I try not to be the girl who takes pictures of food. I try. Or I take ’em real fast when Dan’s not looking. Don’t get mad. You love to hate it. So it’s a win-win!

Ruxbin Kitchen

While home in Chicago over the weekend for a bridal shower, my parents and I had dinner at Ruxbin Kitchen, one of my favorite spots to dine. You must go! I’m smitten! My first trip there was back in November with my boyfriend Dan, and we absolutely fell in love with the food, decor, and spirit (did I just say spirit? yup!) of the place. I mean, real yum. In November (when it was freeeezing), we savored an unbelievable calamari dish with Korean flavors, garlic fries, and an epic linguine and clams. This time around, highlights were the escolar crudo, octopus with fried chickpeas, beef and broccoli, and the lightest pot de creme EVER.  Nate, the kitchen manager, door greeter, expediter, and in-house dry soda maker has welcomed me both times–and remembered that I was from LA. We also got to chat with Vicki, who opened Ruxbin with her brother and chef, Edward Kim. It’s so obvious they’re all passionate about what they do, which is part of what makes it such a special place to visit.

Bon Appetit named Ruxbin one of the best new restaurants of the year in 2011 (along with my one of my favorite LA spots, Son of a Gun). It’s just one of those places that manages to feel special and new every time you go. AND it’s BYOB–both times I’ve taken this bottle of Pinot Noir. One time I saw a table shaking their own martinis! They don’t take reservations (both times I went at opening on a Sunday and was seated right away–but there was a gathering outside before the doors opened). See the current menu here.

Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in Chicago!

bridal shower

I flew home to Chicago over the weekend for my friend Carly’s bridal shower. Carly is my first girlfriend from high school to get married, making the whole event that much more special. And to top it off? She’s marrying JB! Who also went to our high school! It’s such a treat to be from the same town where their families still live. Somehow I lucked out because the two are currently living in Santa Monica, near me.

The bridal shower was gorgeous and intimate. Lots of ladies gathered together to celebrate Carly’s August nuptials with lunch, (several) bellinis, and gifts. It was so wonderful to spend the day with my best friends. Carly wore a beautiful cream dress from Anthropologie. And how adorable is her mother in those polka dots?! I see a strong family resemblance running among those Andersen ladies.

welcome!

Hi! Welcome to a cozy boat. I’ve been wanting to start a blog for months, but not having the “perfect name” was causing epic procrastination. Too bad I didn’t come along this quote earlier. I owe lots of credit to my dear friend Allison, who helped me brainstorm until finally it dawned on me, and Allison said, “I’m pretty sure that’s it.” And so it was. The blog is looking a little bare bones at the moment, but as I learn that will change.

I plan to share bits of my life (and more) with family and friends that are near and far, and hopefully meet a few new readers along the way!

Oh, and in case you were wondering…

“a cozy boat”

was a phrase my Dad made up when we were kids to describe…

happy togetherness

an adventure (big or tiny) we were on

a place of comfort

a moment of (needed) humor

the place one always wanted to be.

first day of school walk with my dad in London = a cozy boat

p.s. I must warn you now I will mention my love of Beyonce often on this blog. I have to assume this is more of a treat than a warning. So let me try that again. I must treat you to the knowledge that I will talk about Beyonce until…always!!
